Biography
Real name: Ivan Vasyliovych Bobul. Born 17 June 1953 in the village of Porubne (now Treblech), Chernivtsi region. Bukovyna — the starting point and the heart of it all. This is where the roots are, where the voice and the character formed.
1968 — vocational training school in Sloviansk, Donetsk region, speciality: lathe operator for ceramic goods. Not the most obvious beginning for a future People's Artist. But already there, in 1969, a competition of amateur arts: second place, participation in the regional festival. The voice was already standing out.
1972-1974 — military service. He toured military bases giving concerts throughout his posting. Won the Military Song Competition. After demobilisation — the Chernivtsi State Music College named after S. Vorobkevych.
During and after the college years — restaurants, live performances. That is how the voice and the stamina were built: alone in front of a crowd that did not come specifically to hear you.
1979 — a turning point. Composer Hromtsev invited Bobul to the Simferopol ensemble More (Sea) of the Crimean State Philharmonic. The first genuinely professional context.
1980 — return to Bukovyna: the Cheremosh ensemble of the Chernivtsi Regional Philharmonic. 1981 — transferred to Zhyva Voda (Living Water) at the same philharmonic, where he replaced Liliia Sandulesu — the person fate would bring him back to for many years.
1983 — participated in the Soviet Song Competition in Sochi. 1984 — the new head of the philharmonic, Levko Dutkivskyi, noticed Bobul and wrote a song cycle for him: Zorianna Nich, Yakshcho Liubysh Kokhay, Ya Pobachyv Hory, Miy Kray. The Melodiya label released them on a small disc. Yakshcho Liubysh Kokhay made the name Ivo Bobul known.
1984 — moved to the Vyvaton ensemble of the Ternopil Philharmonic, which he also led.
1991 — returned to Chernivtsi and began performing as a duo with Liliia Sandulesu. Bereh Liubovi (Shore of Love), A Lypy Tsvitut (And the Lindens Are Blooming), Promin Moho Sertsia (Ray of My Heart). Songs that became part of the culture of an entire generation.
1992 — moved to Kyiv, work at the Etiud theatre. They performed more in America than at home during that period. 1995 — Honoured Artist of Ukraine. 1998 — People's Artist of Ukraine.
2006 — red diploma (top honours) from Chernivtsi National University named after Yurii Fedkovych, faculty of music and education. At the age of 53. 2018 — doctoral dissertation on pop vocal performance. 2019 — associate professor in arts studies. Bobul is not only a singer — he is also a researcher and educator.
A Lypy Tsvitut and a new dimension of popularity
2004 — the group ТНМК (Tanok Na Maydani Kongo) released a song called Ivo Bobul — a satirical anthem presenting him as a superhero. A rare crossover between traditional pop and rap. On 14 June 2015 Ivo Bobul came out on stage at a ТНМК concert and performed the song together with them. A person who could have been offended came out and laughed along. That is a character portrait in itself.
2023 — a new version of A Lypy Tsvitut together with Kolaba. The song, written by Ostap Havrysh, was already a classic hit. The Kolaba remix accumulated 25 million YouTube views. In 2025 it exploded on TikTok: 14+ million views, audience aged 10-20 who had never heard of Bobul before.
The "generational multiplier" worked twice: ТНМК introduced young audiences to him in 2004, then Kolaba did it again in 2023-2025. He did not change his direction — he simply found a new audience through those who already existed in that audience.
Voice and repertoire
Ivo Bobul's baritone is one of the most recognisable in Ukrainian popular music. He is sometimes called "the Ukrainian Pavarotti" — a comparison that sets expectations high, but the voice is genuinely of classical quality. At the same time he has always remained within the popular music format: accessible, warm, for a broad audience.
The repertoire spans hundreds of songs. His own hits alongside gems of world classical music: Krystyna, Pamiati Karuzo (In Memory of Caruso), Yesterday, Luna Tu, Mynaye Den Mynaye Nich, Kak Molody My Byli, Fall in Love, Espera, Liberta. He is not afraid of other people's material — he brings his own style to it.
Key original hits: Yakshcho Liubysh Kokhay (Dutkivskyi), A Lypy Tsvitut (Havrysh), Bereh Liubovi (Tatarchenko), Emihrantka (Hadenko), Dushi Krynytsia (Morozov), Zupynys Shchastia Myt, Nebesa Tvoikh Ochei (Poklad), Zvuchala Skrypka, Rika Zhyttia (Domshynskyi), Vse Zoloto Svitu, Skrypaliу (Zlotnyk).

Concerts and civic commitment
Ivo Bobul is not an artist who stopped at the title of People's Artist and now appears at anniversary events. He continues to tour, record new songs and collaborate with younger performers.
From the start of the conflict in Donbas he visited the combat zone. Sixteen charity concerts at front-line units plus twelve performances in towns in the Ukrainian-controlled parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Not for publicity — he simply went.
2024 — Ukraine tour together with Liliia Sandulesu. A reunion on stage after decades apart. People for whom Bereh Liubovi and A Lypy Tsvitut are part of their own personal history came to these concerts with something more than the usual concert feeling.
Star on the Allée of Fame in Chernivtsi. Teaches vocal at the Kyiv Academy of Estrada and Circus Arts. Between concerts — academic research.
